Aneurysm: Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Brain health is vital for the entire family’s well-being. Recognizing the early signs of a brain aneurysm and acting quickly can mean the difference between life and death. This silent threat can strike at any age, making awareness crucial for timely intervention.

### **What Is a Brain Aneurysm?**
A brain aneurysm is a weakened bulge in a blood vessel, much like a thin spot on a balloon. If it ruptures, it can cause a life-threatening brain bleed. Even unruptured aneurysms can press on nerves or brain tissue, leading to serious complications.

### **The #1 Warning Sign: A Sudden, Severe Headache**
Survivors often describe the headache before rupture as *"the worst pain of their life."* Key red flags include:
- **Extreme, sudden pain** (unlike typical migraines)
- **No prior history** of similar headaches
- **Neurological symptoms** (e.g., confusion, weakness)

**If this happens, seek emergency care immediately.**

### **Other Critical Symptoms**
A ruptured aneurysm may also cause:
✔️ Drooping eyelids or blurred/double vision
✔️ Seizures or sudden loss of consciousness
✔️ Stiff neck, light sensitivity, or vomiting
✔️ Numbness in the face or ringing in the ears

**One or more of these symptoms? Go to the ER without delay.**

### **Are You at Risk?**
Certain factors increase the likelihood of an aneurysm:
- **High blood pressure** or cardiovascular disease
- **Smoking, heavy alcohol use, or cocaine**
- **Family history** of aneurysms
- **Genetic disorders** affecting blood vessels

**Prevention Tip:** Manage blood pressure, quit smoking, and limit alcohol to lower your risk.

### **Diagnosis & Treatment**
Doctors use **CT scans, MRIs, or angiography** to detect aneurysms. Treatment depends on size and risk:
- **Monitoring** for small, stable aneurysms
- **Surgery** (clipping or endovascular coiling) for high-risk cases

### **How to Reduce Your Risk**
While not all aneurysms can be prevented, you can:
✅ Eat a heart-healthy diet and exercise regularly
✅ Avoid smoking and excessive drinking
✅ Control stress and monitor blood pressure
✅ Get checked if you have a family history
