Doctors Ask If Parents Want To Abort ‘Deformed’ Baby But The Parents Refuse

Bringing a new baby into this world is a beautiful time to experience. From the moment we find out we are pregnant, our life is changed forever and we anticipate the big day from that moment forward. That being said, there is also a lot of anxiety that goes along with learning we are pregnant. Perhaps we might stress over the possibility of complications and we hope that we are able to learn about any problems in advance so we can prepare.

When the young couple in this story were expecting a baby, things were going along nicely until the ultrasound was given at 24 weeks. The little boy was a welcome member of the family and they were anticipating the coming birth but the doctors let them know there was a complication. They then asked the parents something they didn’t expect to hear. They wanted to know if they wanted to abort the baby at that point.

Sara Heller and her partner, Chris were told about the problem. Brody, their son had a bilateral cleft lip and palate. The baby would be born with the deformation and it would result in a variety of health and other issues. The doctors were asking if they wanted to keep the baby. Sara and Chris didn’t hesitate. They wanted their son to be born. Although they knew he would look different, they were willing to do all they could to help.

They were also interested in helping others to know about deformities and how they can affect newborn children. "It is OK to be proud of your baby no matter the circumstances,” Sara said, as per HeartEternal. "We wanted to change what ultrasound/newborn/first-year pictures on our Facebook/Instagram accounts looked like. We wanted to spread awareness of cleft lips and palates.”
Brody did need some extra care because of his condition. It can be difficult for a baby with a cleft lip and palate to eat, drink smile and they may have problems breathing. People would ask Sara what was wrong with Brody but she wouldn’t get upset. She would use it as a chance to talk to them. "I decided to educate rather than create a confrontation because that is what I want Brody to do in the future,” she said. "I will want him to educate, to be an advocate for younger cleft kids who don’t have their own voice yet.”

Sara was also the recipient of kindness on many occasions. In a restaurant, a stranger once gave her a piece of paper that had a $1000 check inside ‘for the beautiful baby’. They used the money for necessary medical expenses so the lip repair surgery could begin Brody is recovering nicely after going through the lip surgery last year. There are a few more surgeries needed but he is doing well.
