Don’t overlook these small red spots on your arm – They could be important wa:rning signs

The UK is experiencing unusually large outbreaks of scabies, a highly contagious skin condition caused by mites. Health officials are urging people not to ignore symptoms—such as intense itching and red rashes—and to seek medical help promptly to prevent further spread.

### **What Is Scabies?**

Scabies is an itchy rash caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, spreading through close physical contact. Early treatment is essential to stop transmission, as the infection can affect anyone.

### **Common Symptoms**

- Severe itching, especially at night
- Raised rash or small red spots
- Rash commonly found between fingers, around wrists, waist, underarms, groin, and buttocks

While scabies usually spares the head and neck, **elderly individuals, young children, and those with weakened immune systems** may develop rashes in these areas. In rare cases, a severe form called **crusted scabies** can cause thick, scaly patches on the elbows, knees, hands, and feet.

### **Rising Cases & Treatment Shortages**

According to NHS data, over **3,600 hospital diagnoses** have been recorded, with general practitioner (GP) reports exceeding the five-year average. **Prof. Kamila Hawthorne**, chairwoman of the Royal College of GPs (RCGP), noted a particular spike in northern England.

Many patients avoid seeking help due to **social stigma**, but delaying treatment can worsen symptoms and lead to complications like **secondary infections** or aggravated skin conditions.

### **What Should You Do?**

If you or someone you know shows symptoms:

✅ **See a doctor immediately**—early treatment prevents spread.

✅ **Follow prescribed medications** (usually creams or lotions).

✅ **Wash bedding and clothing** in hot water to kill mites.
