Two weeks ago, a close friend invited me to her baby shower. Eager to help make the day special, I offered to prepare food for all fifty guests. I spent an entire day shopping, chopping, baking, and cooking—all while looking forward to celebrating this meaningful moment with her.
Late that evening, just as I finished, I received a message from her. She explained that due to limited space at the venue, I was unfortunately uninvited—but she still hoped I could drop off the food. I was deeply hurt. After investing so much time, effort, and money into making the occasion special, being excluded felt deeply unfair.
I decided to respond calmly. I thanked her for the initial invitation but let her know that, as my own plans had changed, I wouldn’t be able to provide the food either.
The next day, mutual friends mentioned that the shower had been disrupted by a shortage of food. While it was disappointing to have my generosity taken for granted, the experience taught me an important lesson: it’s necessary to set boundaries when others disregard your effort and kindness.
I don’t hold onto resentment, but the situation helped me recognize the importance of nurturing friendships with people who respect and value your time and care. True friends cherish the love you put into supporting them—and those are the relationships worth investing in.
