Man Verbally Attacks Special-Needs Customer But One Grandma Has Had Enough

If there’s one thing we recognize about our world today, is that diversity really makes it a much better place to live. More and more often, people realize that our differences are what makes the world go round. This is true in every case, but it is particularly important when it comes to dealing with folks living with mental disabilities. These good people have enough issues to deal with in their lives without someone treating them as though they are inferior. This type of discrimination is no different than racial, sexual, or religious bigotry. That’s why when we see folks with those types of challenges come out on top of a hostile situation, it makes us feel wonderful. Unfortunately, there are still some people whose minds are stuck in the dark ages. Some people still think that people with mental challenges should not be allowed to interact with the public. They want to go back to the days where families would hide such people away from the public out of shame. Dealing with these narrow-minded people can be very frustrating because their prejudice goes against the very fabric of our moral decency. And while some people keep their bigotry to themselves, there are still those who feel entitled to bully and harass others with their smalled-minded world views. In this episode of the ABC show “What Would You Do?” a very uncomfortable situation was presented. What would people do if they witnessed a man verbally harassing a mentally challenged customer? Would they quietly ignore him and finish their meals, or would they step up to defend the other customer? According to the center for disease control and prevention, one out of every 700 babies in the U.S. has Down syndrome. It happens so frequently that it is the most common chromosomal disorder. Six thousand children are born with Down syndrome every year in the U.S alone.
Sadly, for years, people with Down syndrome had to fight for their dignity just do things most of us take for granted, such as use business services and work. Today, many people with Down syndrome can hold positions in private businesses and local government, and they continue to contribute to the development of our society. In this scene from “What Would You Do?” a very rude restaurant customer loudly complains about a customer with Down syndrome taking up too much of the waitresses time while he’s trying to order his meal. The waitress was very polite and respectful, allowing the man to take his time, but the rude customer insists that she take his order first. That’s when one courageous grandma decides to step in. What happens next made us all stand up and cheer. Check it out and let us know what you think about this video in the comments section.
