Neurologist issues war.ning to anyone who takes these three popular supplements

A neurologist has issued a strong warning about the dangers of overusing three common supplements, emphasizing that while beneficial in the right amounts, excessive intake can lead to serious health complications.

As supplements grow in popularity, with over 74% of Americans and two-thirds of Brits reportedly using them, it's crucial to understand proper dosage. Dr. Baibing Chen, a neurologist known online as Dr. Bing, highlights three supplements that are particularly risky when taken in excess:

**1. Vitamin D**
While essential for bone and muscle health, taking too much Vitamin D can cause a buildup of calcium in the blood, a condition known as hypercalcemia. This can lead to symptoms like confusion, fatigue, depression, and even psychosis, as well as physical issues including nausea, kidney stones, and bone pain.

**2. Vitamin A (Retinol)**
This fat-soluble vitamin, which supports vision and the immune system, is stored in the liver and can accumulate over time. Dr. Bing warns that an overdose can cause pseudotumor cerebri, a condition that mimics a brain tumor by increasing pressure in the skull. This can result in severe headaches, blurred vision, and potentially permanent vision loss.

**3. Zinc**
Commonly found in multivitamins and cold remedies, zinc is vital for immune function and wound healing. However, long-term overuse can inhibit the body's ability to absorb copper. This deficiency can lead to myeloneuropathy, a condition that damages the spinal cord and peripheral nerves, causing symptoms like numbness, tingling, weakness, and difficulty walking.

Dr. Bing concludes that while these nutrients are crucial for health, "moderation is key, and more is not always better." It is essential to adhere to recommended daily allowances and consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.
