The baby was found by 31-year-old Diego Sebastian Penayo, a gym instructor from Posadas, Argentina. He stumbled upon the infant wrapped in a plastic bag and covered with a blanket. What shocked him most was the sight of a rusty knife embedded in the baby’s back. Though gravely injured, the newborn was still crying out in distress when Penayo found her, according to *The Sun*. Diego immediately took her to a nearby police station, and from there, she was rushed to a pediatric hospital for urgent medical attention. Surprisingly, doctors determined that the baby was not in immediate life-threatening danger. They estimated she was approximately two days old.
While the infant had sustained multiple wounds from the rusty knife, most of the injuries were superficial, and her vital organs remained unharmed. Inspired by her resilience and strength, the medical team named her Esperanza, meaning "Hope.” Authorities were able to locate the baby’s mother, whose identity was not disclosed. She was taken into custody after it was revealed that she had given birth and abandoned the child shortly after leaving the hospital, as reported by the *Daily Mail*.
