They found something in the black bags

The Case of Laci Peterson (2002–2003)

• The Discovery: In April 2003, after months of a massive missing persons search in California, the remains of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner, were discovered along the shoreline of the San Francisco Bay.

• The Forensic Reality: Passing beachgoers and authorities found the remains separated after months of tidal action. Legal and media archives from the trial detailed how debris, plastic, and marine elements impacted the recovery site, which became pivotal forensic evidence in the prosecution of Scott Peterson.

The Melanie McGuire "Suitcase Murders" (2004)

• The Discovery: In May 2004, fishermen in the Chesapeake Bay near Virginia Beach pulled three matching dark-colored suitcases out of the water.

• The Forensic Reality: Inside the luggage, authorities discovered the dismembered remains of William McGuire. The forensic investigation traced the luggage, the medical sedatives used, and matching plastic bags back to his wife, Melanie McGuire, a fertility nurse who was later convicted of the crime in a highly publicized 2007 trial.
